The first step in the recruitment process is your online application. Your online application should provide information about your professional and educational background to demonstrate that you meet the requirements for the role. 

It is also important that you take the time to read the position description carefully and make sure that you show that your experience and skills match what is required for the role. 

We strongly recommend you submit a cover letter when you apply for a role with the AFL.

A cover letter is your selling tool to showcase why you are the best candidate for the role. This is your chance to explain and show how your prior work experience; knowledge; skills and strengths make you the best candidate for the position. A good cover letter should be no more than one page long; targeted to the position; clear and concise and maintains a professional and positive writing tone. 

A résumé is your personal advertisement, your chance to stand out from the crowd. Make sure that in your résumé you provide a summary of your professional and educational background and skills. Tailor your résumé to demonstrate how your skills; knowledge; strengths and professional work experience matches the role. Take out details that are not relevant to the position you are applying for and emphasise the skills that match the position.

Throughout the process, we’ll share insights into the kind of work you’ll be doing at the AFL, the team you’ll be joining and what it’s like to work here. Our biggest tip throughout the process is yourself. You are the main character in this journey - so show us who you are!

We discuss remuneration ranges with candidates who progress to the screening and interview stages of our roles. 

We look for many different skills and abilities, as well as how you can enhance the AFL and our culture. So, even if you don’t think you quite meet all the skills listed or tick all the boxes, we’d still love to hear from you!

Due to our work's nature, we apply a minimum age policy of 18 years for employees at the AFL and Marvel Stadium. This ensures we provide a safe work environment for our employees, as well as children and young people who are involved in our programs, services and facilities.

Each role and level can be different. We will keep you updated along the way to ensure you know what to expect and if there are any changes in the timeline.

Depending on the role you are applying for, the process will vary. It can consist of phone screens, one or more interviews with various stakeholders before an outcome is reached.

At the AFL, we pride ourselves in matching the right person for the right job. To help us select the right person, we undertake behavioural interviewing. Behavioural interviewing allows us to determine how a candidate will perform their duties based on their prior behaviour in the workplace.

To prepare for an interview it is suggested that you:

• Create a good first impression: Groom for the occasion and act in a professional.
  manner. Ensure you arrive on time and have prepared any documentation required from you.
• Research the business and role. Take the time to understand the working environment of our business and the role. Prepare for any likely questions you may be asked about the role.
• Structure your responses. Think about the question before jumping to a response; structure your responses by describing the situation, what action you undertook and the result of your action.

Depending on the position, the AFL conducts a number of checks on potential candidates. This may include reference checks; police checks and conflict of interest checks. Before commencing with the AFL all successful applications, regardless of role, must have an active and valid Working with Children’s check for the state or territory which they work in. This is in line with our commitment to child and young person safety as a child safe organisation.
