IT STARTED with the Grand Final, now Queensland wants to take the Brownlow Medal off Victoria.

Just a day after pitching to host the 2020 decider to AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan, Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has started the push for the AFL's night of nights. 

It would be just the second Brownlow Medal count held out of Victoria in its 97-year history and first since Sydney hosted the event in 1999. 

"Of course I would love to see the Brownlow Medal here in the Sunshine State," Ms. Palaszczuk told AFL.com.au on Thursday. 

"Queensland would be the perfect place for the glitz and the glamour of the Brownlow and it makes sense if we're going to be the temporary home for the AFL.

"What I would really love to see is the AFL Grand Final played here in Queensland."

The Brownlow Medal is contracted at Crown Palladium – where it has been held for the past 17 consecutive years – until the end of 2021. 

However, rising COVID-19 numbers in Victoria – as shown by 317 new cases recorded on Thursday – are likely to force a re-think for the count in its traditional format. 

One scenario floated by key figures in Queensland would be to move the count from the Monday of Grand Final week to the Monday immediately following the conclusion of the home and away season.

With 10 Victorian clubs relocating to Queensland for the bulk of the remaining 11 games, as well as the potential of both New South Wales clubs moving due to fears COVID-19 numbers could rise there, 14 of the 18 clubs could be in south-east Queensland by season's end. 

The Virgin Australia All-Australian evening is also scheduled for the week immediately following the home and away season and likely be moved away from Melbourne should it continue as an in-person event. 

It is understood the Suns have already raised the possibility of staging the Brownlow Medal in Queensland with its local and state government bodies.

"No one does the red carpet quite like the Gold Coast. Whether it's the Logies, the Commonwealth Games, Queen + Adam Lambert (band), we know we could put on a stunning event," Suns chief executive Mark Evans told AFL.com.au.

And the Lions also gave the concept the tick of approval.

"I think we'd do a pretty good job. We've had the Logies so why not have the Brownlow? I think we'd do a fine job, we might even have one or two in the running at the end of the season," Lions chairman Andrew Wellington told ABC on Thursday evening. 

Lions midfielder Lachie Neale is the raging favourite for this year's Brownlow Medal and is currently leading the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year award. 

The Star on the Gold Coast has hosted The Logies for the past two years and would be one venue considered. 

While Crown Palladium has a capacity of around 1300 people, The Star's Pavilion Boardroom can fit more than 1100. 

The Brownlow Medal has been held at Crown every year since 2000, except for 2002 when it was staged at Marvel Stadium.
