BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss has urged his side to regain its competitive streak for Saturday night’s clash with Richmond at the Gabba.

The Lions’ season hangs in the balance after a 65-point loss to the Bulldogs at Docklands on Sunday left them in 11th place on the ladder.

Voss said he was hurt by the way the Lions fell away in the second half.

“You’re angry, you get hurt,” Voss said.

“I don’t think we ever want to see that for a Lions jumper.”

“We’ve got to make sure that real effort about what the Lions brand stands for is there.”

With seven losses from its past eight games, Voss said the players had lost their competitiveness and must quickly regain it before they could think about winning games or making the finals.

“It’s not about the outcome anymore,” Voss said.

“The four points become absolutely irrelevant unless you get your competitiveness, if you don’t get it on the weekends then you’ve got to train it.

“There’s no easy way through it, you’ve got to make sure that we’re prepared to be able to take the hits during the week to prepare ourselves for the weekend.”

Jonathan Brown’s groin injury saw him miss the clash with the Bulldogs, but Voss said the injury would not end his season.

Voss said Brown would make a full recovery in four weeks and was desperate to get back to leading the team.

“He desperately wanted to be able to play, there’s no doubt he wanted to lead his team," Voss said.

Voss said he was reluctant to move Mitch Clark out of the centre square to cover for the loss of Brown.

That may open the door for Aaron Cornelius to fill the giant shoes of the skipper.

“He certainly comes into contention, that’s for sure,” Voss said.

“He obviously comes in fresh because the reserves didn’t play (on the weekend), he’s been in pretty good form also.”

Brown’s absence adds to a growing injury toll which now also includes Ash McGrath (hamstring - 4 weeks), Matt Maguire (foot - 3 weeks), Josh Drummond (knee - indefinite), Jed Adcock (foot - 4 to 6 weeks) and James Polkinghorne (thigh - 1 week).

Voss admitted the casualty list was taking its toll on the club.

“It’s a definite factor,” Voss said.

“Any team you’re seeing do well at the moment, they’ve got continuity on their list, the same team is turning up week in week out and we probably haven’t been able to replicate that.”

The Lions had just six contested marks against the Bulldogs, who registered 17.

Voss said the players were too focused on Brendan Fevola, who can easily be double teamed in the absence of Brown.

“We’ve got the options in between,” Voss said.

“It’s just that we are bypassing them and so we are really making it particularly easy for the defence at the moment to bottle up our back half.”
