A SWISS watchmaker will become the official timekeeper of the AFL for the next three seasons.

AFL football operations general manager Adrian Anderson said the Swiss Timing technicians, on behalf of TISSOT, would control all league matches this season

“Our football operations department is determined that every part of our national competition be presented in the most professional manner possible and TISSOT brings to us a reputation for Swiss excellence in time keeping,” Anderson said.

“The equipment includes sound alerts to the timekeepers at key decision moments during the match such as when time-on is being added.

“Our timekeepers have been involved in an intensive program and will be trialling the equipment in conjunction with our old equipment in the first four rounds of the premiership season.”

The partnership also includes exclusive rights to be the official watch of the AFL.

TISSOT has a long history of sports timekeeping globally as official timekeepers of NASCAR, MotoGP, cycling, ice hockey and fencing.

TISSOT brand general manager Leighton Richards said his company was well-established in international sport.

“Our sponsorship is not only in time but extends to technology, expertise and perfection,” Mr Richards said.

Key features of the new timekeeping system include:

  • Printer attached for hardcopy recording of all timekeeping
  • Accurate timekeeping of intervals between quarters
  • Audible prompts for the operation of the siren
  • Visible warnings of inappropriate or accidental operation
  • User control over game parameters
  • Seamless timekeeping into extra periods if required
