Ablett visited leading Melbourne specialist Greg Hoy on Tuesday morning after having scans on the injured shoulder the previous day.
But following an afternoon of deliberation on the best road to recovery, Ablett and the Suns have not reached a decision.
In a statement released on Tuesday night, the Suns said Ablett and their medical team were "in the process of assessing the options available to treat the injury".
The two likely scenarios are season-ending surgery or a slightly riskier procedure that could see the dual Brownlow medallist back on the field within six weeks.
Ablett injured his shoulder following a Brent Macaffer tackle in the third quarter of the Suns' win over Collingwood at Metricon Stadium on Saturday night.
The stakes are huge, with the football world waiting to learn whether Ablett will be able to lead Gold Coast into what could be its first finals campaign.
After seeing Hoy, Ablett admitted it was a little frustrating.
"I'm still positive – it's part of footy, and you know I'm hoping I can get back and play this season, but I can't control that," he said.
