PAUL Roos plans to use Melbourne's pre-season training camp to put the Demons through school, assistant coach Simon Goodwin says.
Half of Melbourne's playing list has been turned over since Roos took charge in late 2013, with 10 new players arriving this off-season alone.
Now Roos is aiming to accelerate the Demons' rebuild by hammering home his game plan during their training camp in Maroochydore.
“We’ve got an 11-day camp and we’ve got some pretty high expectations of what we’re trying to achieve at the camp – both physically [and mentally]," coach-in-waiting Goodwin told the club's website.
“The majority of the time will be focused on our football game plan and really embedding that.”
The Demons recruited seven new draftees this off-season, headlined by top-end talent Christian Petracca (pick No.2) and Angus Brayshaw (No.3).
It capped off an active trade period, in which Heritier Lumumba, Jeff Garlett and ex-Giant Sam Frost arrived at the club.
With such a significant remodeling of the playing list, Goodwin said the camp was a chance for him to get to know the players better before he takes over from Roos in 2017.
"It’s a great opportunity with 11 days away for this playing group – to come together as one,” he said.
“We’ve had 22 list changes over two years, so that’s 50 per cent of the list, so for myself [it’s about] really getting to know guys.
“The best camps that I’ve been on and been associated with are the ones where you walk away and you’ve got that real sense of achievement.
"That’s certainly what we’ll look for in Maroochydore.”
Goodwin crossed to Melbourne last September on a five-year deal after previously working as an assistant at Essendon since 2011.
The 38-year-old said he had relished the new challenge at the Demons, where he's been developing the club's young players and passing on his extensive knowledge from his 275-game career at Adelaide to Melbourne's midfielders.
“I’m loving it. To be involved with Paul and the players on this journey is really exciting,” Goodwin said.
“I really enjoy working with the young kids [in the development area] and I’ve been able to build some really good relationships early on and really put some programs in there to fast track some development in the footy club.
“The younger guys have been terrific and really jumped on board and they want to improve as players individually, but also as a team.
"So there have been some good building blocks, but I’m looking forward to progressing now to the midfield and spending some time there.”
