NORTH Melbourne coach Brad Scott was left "incredulous" after an apparent goal by Jack Ziebell was overruled on review during the Kangaroos' 41-point win over Melbourne on Sunday.

Ziebell launched a 55m bomb early in the final term that looked to be a clear major.

The goal umpire thought it was a goal but wanted to check if the ball hit the post and the review was called for.

Despite widespread acceptance that it was a goal, the goal umpire's decision was overturned after it was judged to have hit the post.

"I was incredulous because when the umpire says 'it's a goal, I just want to check if it hit the post' and I'm not sure if the viewers at home had a different view to me but the clips I saw, if that was conclusive, then I don't know who's making that adjudication," Scott said post-match.

"But look, we accept the umpire's decision and we accept they make mistakes too, because we make plenty."

Melbourne coach Paul Roos was surprised the review took more than a minute and that the final call was that it hit the post.

"Hit the post? Which one, the one over the fence?" he said.

Ziebell tweeted after the match: "I think the AFL owes me a goal tonight.. good win by the boys. #goroos".



The score review system has come under fire this weekend after some controversial decisions.

On Saturday night, Essendon's Ben Howlett snapped a shot at goal early in the final term that looked to have grazed the post.

Howlett celebrated putting the Bombers 15 points up over Adelaide, whose players protested the decision, but a review was not called for.

That followed a decision to overturn Kane Cornes' goal for Port Adelaide against the Western Bulldogs earlier on Saturday after the players and umpires had already set up for the centre bounce.

Despite the critics, Brad Scott said he remained a fan of the system if it was used correctly.

"I like the system because you should be able to fix obvious errors. But my understanding was if it's not an obvious error, go with the umpire's call," he said.

"So the umpire got overruled on that one (Ziebell's goal). As I said it was staggering, I couldn't believe it.

"I'm not sure anyone thought 'Oh yeah, that was a good call', maybe except if you're a Melbourne supporter."
