HAVING trained as a defender all pre-season, the transition into Essendon's backline is all but compete for Michael Hurley.

The 23-year-old has played the vast majority of his 79 games as a key forward for the Bombers, booting 99 goals.

But under new coach Mark Thompson, Hurley is set for a change of position.

"So far I have trained every session as a backman - it has been great for me and I feel like I am at home in the backline," Hurley said.

"As a junior I played my entire career as a backman, I feel pretty comfortable back there and the guys I am playing alongside such as 'Fletch' (Dustin Fletcher), Cale Hooker, Jake Carlisle and Tayte Pears are all fantastic players which helps as well."

Hurley has showcased his ability at both ends of the ground during his five seasons at AFL level but is ready to settle down in one position.

But given the losses of Stewart Crameri (Bulldogs) and Scott Gumbleton (Fremantle), Hurley said he would probably be required to still play in attack at times, as could Carlisle.

He said a different-looking Bombers forward line, including veteran recruit Paul Chapman, could be a dangerous set-up.

"It would be nice to settle down in one position but for me I am pretty happy to play where I am told to play," he said.

“If it is up forward so be it, if it is down back well that is great but I guess it depends on injuries and match-ups.

"Jason Winderlich has been flying on the track, as has 'Chappy' (Chapman), so those two will be a good avenue towards goal.

"It wouldn’t surprise me if big Jake Carlisle plays a bit forward and kicks a few goals as well.

"It will be a different sort of a set up but will be a bit exciting."
