Gold Coast and GWS elect to use compensation picks in this year's draft
THE AFL wishes to advise that a total of three compensation selections, received for losing a player to either Gold Coast or GWS during the expansion period, will be compulsorily activated at the 2014 NAB AFL Draft in November this year. It was also determined today that one compensation selection would be held over until the 2015 NAB AFL Draft.
Clubs which had received compensation draft selections in return for having had an uncontracted player elect to join Gold Coast, or clubs which had traded for a compensation selection in the 2010, 2011 or 2012, 2013 AFL exchange periods, were required on Tuesday to activate those selections for this year's draft. Clubs which had received a compensation selection for losing a player to GWS, or traded for one of those compensation picks tied to that club, had until 2pm Tuesday AEDT to decide whether to activate those selections for this year's draft, or for it to be used compulsorily at next year's draft.
The following selections have been activated for this year's draft:
Gold Coast – round one selection. (compensation for the loss of Gary Ablett. Traded from Geelong to Gold Coast in the 2012 trade period). To be taken in round one immediately after the selection of Geelong.
GWS – end round one selection. (compensation for the loss of Jared Brennan. Traded from the Brisbane Lions to Gold Coast in the 2010 trade period; traded from Gold Coast to GWS in the 2012 trade period). To be taken at the end of round one immediately after the selection of the first-placed club.
Gold Coast – round three selection. (compensation for the loss of Josh Fraser. Traded from Collingwood to West Coast in the 2010 trade period. Traded from West Coast to Gold Coast in the 2013 trade period). To be taken in round three immediately after the selection of Collingwood.
The two clubs both have the right to on-trade these compensation selections to another club in the 2014 exchange period, but all these selections must be used at the 2014 NAB AFL Draft.
The following club elected not to activate its compensation selection, which now must be used at the 2015 draft:
GWS compensation picks still to be activated;
Gold Coast – end round one selection. (Compensation for the loss of Rhys Palmer. Traded from Fremantle to the Giants in 2011 for round one pick 20. Traded from GWS to Gold Coast in 2012). To be taken at the end of round one immediately after the selection of the first-placed club.
The Suns have the right to on-trade this compensation selection to another club in the 2014 exchange period, but this selection cannot be activated at this year's draft.
The AFL is pleased to announce that Toyota will remain the game’s premier partner for a further two years following agreement to renew the ongoing partnership until 2016.
