MIDFIELDS drive modern football teams, and how they go often determines how the team goes.

The Brisbane midfield boasted the Fab Four, and they swept to three consecutive flags.

The West Coast midfield – brilliantly led by Chris Judd and Ben Cousins – took one flag and missed another by a kick.

So it's no surprise that Kangaroos midfield coach Darren Bewick agrees that his group is a barometer for the rest of the side.

"It's probably a reflection of the team – a bit inconsistent," he said.

"We have good games, where we're very good, and as you can see, we can match it with any midfield and any team going around.

"But in other games, we let ourselves down with our inconsistency, our workrate and that type of thing, and that's something we've got to get better at.

"The boys know that, and that's probably been a disappointing part of the season. We've been inconsistent in our output throughout the year."

As a result, Bewick said satisfaction and contentment were not emotions he was currently on good terms with.

"Well, I don't know if you could be happy, due to the inconsistency.

"That has been disappointing. It's been a reflection of the team – we've played well sometimes, and other times – when we're expected to go well – we haven't.

"I don't know if that's physical thing – it's certainly not a talent or ability thing – I don't know if it's a mental thing in the way they approach the game, and get ahead of themselves or things like that, but it's just something we've got to get better at, because it's cost us games throughout the year."
