NORTH Melbourne midfielder Leigh Adams has revealed a battle with depression earlier this year forced him to weigh up his football future.

Adams, who is on the verge of returning to senior football, considered retirement during a bout of short-term depression that was brought on by yet another concussion in March.

The 26-year-old, who suffered three head knocks in 2014, suffered another concussion in a VFL practice match with Werribee this year and needed "six or eight weeks to make a clear decision" on whether he wanted to play on. 

He said his mental state was "pretty bad there for probably three or four weeks where it didn't matter what was happening". 

"I just thought the world was against me and, 'Poor me … I don't want to play any more'," Adams told Channel Seven.  

"I'd had enough and was just sick of getting knocked around. 

"It is really common, one in two people with concussion get depression."

Adams was named as an emergency for the Kangaroos' clash against the Sydney Swans on Saturday night.
