Winderlich was injured late in Essendon's 25-point loss to Port Adelaide at Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night, a game that looks set to be costly for the Bombers with defender Michael Hibberd also straining his hamstring just before half-time.
Essendon doctor Bruce Reid told the club's website on Wednesday afternoon Winderlich would have scans later this week to confirm the extent of his injury.
"Jason suffered a minor strain to his hamstring during the match and with his injury history we are going to be careful as to how we manage his rehabilitation," Reid said.
"We will send him for scans later in the week and continue to closely monitor his progress."
Winderlich has played just 18 games in the past three seasons. After rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in 2011, he has struggled with soft-tissue injuries.
But Winderlich, 29, said he was confident he could be a strong performer for the Bombers in 2014 despite his latest setback.
"The positive news is it's only a minor strain and whether I return in round one, two or three I know I can play a key role for the team," Winderlich said.
"I'm confident the training I have done over this pre-season will enable me to make a quick recovery."
