HAWTHORN premiership captain Luke Hodge began light running duties just two days after having successful surgery on his broken right arm.

The 31-year-old had an operation on Tuesday to repair the fractured ulna bone he suffered in a marking contest with Geelong midfielder Mitch Duncan on Easter Monday.

Hodge said he began running drills less than 48 hours after surgery but did not reveal how long he would be sidelined for.

"It's pulled up really good. It's a lot better than I thought," Hodge told Triple M on Sunday.

"As far as movement, it's just more the tenderness getting hit and obviously the rotation as well is probably the only thing that's annoying at this stage.

"I had the operation at 2.30pm Tuesday and I ran (on) Thursday morning."

Hodge is expected to miss at least a month, joining fellow premiership teammates Brad Hill (wrist), Jarryd Roughead (knee) and Liam Shiels (wrist) on the Hawks' injury list.

Earlier, Hodge said Roughead was on track in his recovery from the posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction he had on his right knee in February.

"It's roughly 20-24 weeks from the op. I think he was at week nine now," the four-time premiership star told radio station 3AW.

"They're obviously not going to rush him. To have him at the backend of the season is the most important part."

Meanwhile, Hodge gave every indication that he was intent on playing beyond this year after signing consecutive one-year contract extensions.

"I guess it all depends on how the body is and how the club's going, and where 'Clarko' [senior coach Alastair Clarkson] and the coaches see our list," he said.

"At this stage, I'll be looking to play on but when you get over 30 (years old), it's a long season."
