SO BEGINS what some call "the silly season", as the NAB AFL Trade Period kicks off on Monday.
The exchange period starts on October 6 before finishing at 2pm on Thursday October 16.
Any number of players will be looking for new homes, while some will be on the move but they just don't know it yet.
Howlett in demand
Carlton and Fremantle are both in the running to sign out-of-contract Essendon midfielder Ben Howlett.
As reported by AFL.com.au on Sunday, the Bombers have upped their offer to the 25-year-old as they try to retain their key on-baller.
Howlett, who is renowned for the pressure he applies for the Bombers, is more likely to stay if James Hird survives an important board meeting on Monday, the Herald Sun reports.
Fremantle has also signalled its interest in Howlett, but it is understood he wants to continue his career in Melbourne.
Essendon will also consider making a pitch to Greater Western Sydney ruckman Jon Giles, after almost certainly losing Paddy Ryder to Port Adelaide.
Varcoe on the go?
West Coast has shown interest in Geelong speedster Travis Varcoe.
The three-time premiership Cat is contracted for next season, but the Herald Sun reports Geelong is prepared to trade if the right deal comes along.
There was some speculation Varcoe had been discussed between Melbourne and Geelong officials in the construction of the Mitch Clark trade, but AFL.com.au understands that is not the case.
Varcoe finished 14th in Geelong's best and fairest, which was held last Thursday night.
Strauss hopes for second chance
Melbourne defender James Strauss faces an uncertain future and will be shopped around during the trade period.
The 24-year-old has not been delisted but he is out of contract and has been told by Demons coach Paul Roos to look for a new home, the Herald Sun reports.
Strauss, pick No.19 in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft, has played 24 games for the Demons.
Injuries, in particular a broken leg sustained in 2011, have limited his senior opportunities.
