ADELAIDE is on the verge of re-signing key midfielder Scott Thompson and could announce the 32-year-old's re-commitment within the next fortnight.

AFL.com.au understands the Crows are finalising details of what is expected to be a one-year deal.

Thompson has defied Father Time this season, averaging 27 possessions a game and is ranked fifth in the AFL for contested possessions and eighth for clearances.

He has also averaged more tackles in 2015 than at any other time in his 15-year career.

Thompson's work on the inside has been crucial for the Crows – he leads the club for clearances and the club leads the competition.

His importance to Adelaide's middle could be heightened next year if Patrick Dangerfield decides to leave as a free agent.
