ESSENDON chief executive Xavier Campbell will meet with Jobe Watson this week as the Bombers captain moves closer to making a call on his future.

Watson arrived back in Australia last week after spending much of the season overseas in the United States.

He is the final member of Essendon's 12 banned players who are yet to confirm his intentions for next season.

The 31-year-old has remained fit during his break and has trained with the group of suspended players since touching down in Australia, but has not yet declared his plans for 2017.

Campbell is set to get a greater indication of those this week.

"I'm catching up with Jobe later this week and we'll have a discussion then," Campbell said on Wednesday.

"It's certainly something we're not going to put pressure and have a timeframe on and things like that, but we feel comfortable with where that's at.

"We want what's best for Jobe – we've said that all along. We'll continue to support him and when he makes that decision we'll sit down with him and have that discussion."

The vast majority of past and present Bombers hit with 12-month WADA suspensions were permitted to return to AFL clubs on Wednesday for training and medical assessments.

David Myers was the first Bomber to arrive at Essendon headquarters in Tullamarine.

Watson needs to wait another week before being able to return to Essendon given his full ban ends a week later than that of his teammates on November 21.

His provisional ban was held over a week last year when he played in the International Rules Series.

"The guys won't officially come back in until next week, they're still doing their own thing at the moment. Next week they'll come in for some testing and there won't be any real formalities to that," Campbell said.

"The guys will continue to train together as a group away from the club – that's a choice they're keen to support at the moment.

"They can come and do recovery and things like that but won't officially come in until next week."

Campbell labeled the players' return as "an important milestone" in their comeback to football after missing the entire 2016 season.
