Prized Brisbane Lions draftee Jared Polec has put new club and city jitters behind him to focus on unleashing his fast and attacking style for the Lions in 2011.

Polec, who was selected with pick five in last year's NAB AFL Draft, said he had been apprehensive about entering the club, but had quickly settled into the Lions' environment.

"My first step in was pretty daunting, going straight into the changing rooms, getting my kit on and running out with the side," Polec said.

"I was pretty nervous about how high the standard was going to be and trying to fit in straight away, which was pretty difficult, but I think I've got off on the right foot," the 18-year-old said.

Polec, who was drafted from Woodville West Torrens in South Australia, said the rigid training schedule had been hard to acclimatise to.

"When we started training I was basically sleeping 24/7, but I've got used to the workload now and I'm able to have a better balance," Polec told lions.com.au at the club's Telstra AFL Community Camp in Toowoomba last week.

"Every training session you get more and more used to it, and even though my body still feels it a bit, you've just got to push through."

While Brisbane swooped on Polec with its first selection in the draft, there had been constant whispers that Richmond, who had pick six, were keen to select the South Australian.

Polec said that he too had heard the whispers, and only a phone call from the Lions leading up to the draft had confirmed their plans.

"I was pretty nervous before the draft," he admitted. "The Lions gave me a call four or five days before the draft and asked if I would like to move up to Brisbane and whether I would enjoy it," he said.

"Then two days later there was an article in the newspaper about Richmond maybe having to change their minds because Brisbane was probably going to take me at pick five. So I knew pretty much where I was going."

Polec has worked closely with midfield and stoppages coaches Shane Woewodin and Beau McDonald on improving his disposal, and, having been likened to Fremantle star Stephen Hill with his pace and agility, he is hopeful of an opportunity in 2011.

"I haven't been told about the NAB Cup yet, and the facilities and help you get from the coaches is amazing," he said.

"But my dream doesn't stop there, I just want to play a game this year, that's what it's about."

"In the past I have been able to play as I like to, so hopefully that'll happen here at the Lions as well and I can play some free-flowing footy for the club," Polec said.
