A TOTAL of 738 players are on 2009 AFL lists after the NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft and NAB AFL Rookie Draft on Tuesday.

That's an increase of 25 players from 2008 after the AFL increased the size of the rookie lists for 2009.

This was done to allow for upcoming compromised drafts with the new Gold Coast team to get a big slice of the draft action from next year on.

A total of 632 players are on senior/veteran lists, with 106 on ever-valuable rookie lists.

With Richmond having the final selection in Tuesday's pre-season draft, it meant Ben Cousins filled the last available position on any club's senior list for 2009.

Cousins was the 85th player selected in the drafting period. A total of 79 players were drafted in the NAB AFL Draft, six in the pre-season and 74 in the rookie draft. This brought the number to 159 players drafted during those three meetings.

A maximum of 749 spots could have been filled, but there are 11 vacancies in 2009, after Adelaide (one), Brisbane Lions (three), Port Adelaide (one), Richmond (one), Sydney Swans (three) and Western Bulldogs (two) did not fill their rookie list.

St Kilda will enter the 2009 with the most number of players. They have 39 players on their primary list (including Max Hudghton as an outside veteran), plus nine on their rookie list, for a total of 48 players.

St Kilda's extended list includes two NSW scholarship players on its rookie list. Whenever a club has a NSW scholarship player on its rookie list, it is entitled to have another vacancy.

Khan Haretuku was retained for a second season as a rookie, after being one of the inaugural NSW scholarship players elevated onto the rookie list for the 2008 season. Blake McGrath, who was also a NSW scholarship holder with the Saints, has been promoted onto their rookie list for 2009.

Adelaide, Port Adelaide, Richmond and Western Bulldogs enter the 2009 season with the smallest lists with 45 players each.

The Crows, Power and Tigers have 40 senior-listed players (including two veterans) and five rookies each, while the Dogs have 39 senior-listed players (including one veteran) and six rookies.

Reigning premiers Hawthorn, Carlton and Fremantle will enter the 2009 season with the smallest senior lists in the competition, with 38 players and no veterans.

But like St Kilda, the Hawks do have the largest rookie list with nine players on it. This brings Hawthorn's total list number to 47, which is one more than Carlton and Fremantle.

This came about after Shane Crawford's retirement in the lead-up to the second list lodgment on November 14, which meant the club gained an extra rookie, rather than another player on the senior list. The 1999 Brownlow Medallist and 2008 premiership player was a veteran outside of the primary list last season.
