IT'S ONE of the more unusual injuries suffered in the NAB AFL Women's competition, but a split tongue is not going to prevent Ebony Marinoff from playing this weekend.

The exuberant Adelaide midfielder – who often kicks and handballs with her tongue sticking out – suffered the injury in the third term of Adelaide's 35-point win over Carlton on Saturday night.

Marinoff had a sore mouth after clashing heads with Carlton midfielder Katie Loynes, who had to leave the ground with a badly cut forehead, but didn't realise the extent of the damage.

She was wearing a mouthguard at the time.

After the match, Marinoff's stats read as a game-high 16 disposals, six tackles, four clearances and an undetermined number of stitches in her tongue.

The stitches have since been removed and she is set to take her spot in Adelaide's line-up for its must-win clash against Fremantle in Darwin on Friday night.

Also expected to play is star co-captain Erin Phillips, who was rested in the second half of last week's match due to a tight quad.

Phillips is back training on her modified program, which is normal for the 32-year-old former elite basketballer.

The same right quad concern caused her to miss the first two matches of the season when she strained it.

Adelaide needs to win its two remaining matches – the other is against Collingwood – and  have other results to go its way to qualify for the Grand Final.
