VICTORIA Police will crack down on inappropriate behaviour this Saturday as grand final celebrations sweep the Melbourne CBD.

There will be hundreds of extra police rostered on for 24 hours from early Saturday morning in the Yarra precinct and surrounds, with separate operations to run on Melbourne's transit systems.

The police presence and additional security will also monitor the AFL's live site at Federation Square and Sidney Myer Music Bowl, where the game will be broadcast to Collingwood members.

Victoria Police has said it would not be lenient when it came to unruliness on what is one of the biggest days on the Australian sporting calendar.

"We're not going to put up with behaviour that ruins it for others," northern division superintendent Rod Wilson said on Wednesday.

"Whoever wins the game, it should be a day of celebration.

"If you behave in an inappropriate manner, the police have the authority to issue you with a hefty $478 fine, so you don't want to come away with that in your back pocket."

Four people were ejected from last year's Geelong-St Kilda grand final for inappropriate behaviour.

There will also be a significant booze bus presence around the MCG, with the League urging the sell-out crowd to consider public transport.

Ticket scalping and the sale of unendorsed merchandise without the AFL's official swing tag will also be on the radar.

"Anyone identified or caught selling tickets above face value without authorisation can be prosecuted," AFL chief operating officer Gillon McLachlan said.

"If you buy the tickets you run the risk of being caught with scalped tickets and they will be cancelled."

The ground is expected to be at capacity with all public, AFL members and corporate areas sold out.

McLachlan said the priority for the League was to ensure that those who attended the game or the various live sites enjoyed a safe grand final experience.

"Our message is to have a great day, enjoy the spirit of it but please enjoy it in a safe and responsible manner," he said.

"If you don't have a ticket, please look for the right spot to watch the game at the Myer Music Bowl, Federation Square or other areas in the precinct."

If St Kilda wins, the players will be presented at Federation Square after the game.

If Collingwood wins, only Mick Malthouse, Nick Maxwell and a few other players will appear at the League's official live site.

However, the Magpies squad will join the crowd of 13,000 at the alcohol-free Music Bowl.

As was the case in 2009, St Kilda fans can watch the game at O'Donnell Gardens from 11am.
