THE FIRST steps on a tough six month journey were taken by the Gold Coast bid team on Wednesday.

Barely 24 hours after being given until mid-October to meet the criteria for a 17th licence, the bid team - officially dubbed GC17 - unveiled its game plan in the heart of the tourist strip.

The GC17's John Witheriff said original Brisbane Bears player and Gold Coast City Council chief executive Dale Dickson would join the board of the bid team.

Gold Coast lawyer Witheriff said new board members would be announced in the next few weeks.

"Yesterday we were given an opportunity, today we want the Gold Coast community to join us in turning this into a reality," Witheriff said.

"The Gold Coast club will only be successful if we generate community support."

Criteria that the bid group must meet includes commitment of at least 20,000 potential club members and delivering 111 sponsors, all in six months.

Witheriff said in the next few weeks the bid group would hold business and football forums and start "engaging the Gold Coast community" for ideas about a name, club colours and a jumper design.

Witheriff said people and businesses can register their support by logging on at gc17.com.au which was launched on Wednesday.

In another bid to attract committed supporters, a football forum will be at the Gold Coast Stadium on April 30.

The GC17 group will also establish a volunteer base to sign up supporters.

Witheriff said he had been "overwhelmed" by interest from businesses since Tuesday's official application for the 17th licence and 2011 entry.

He said a business forum to sign sponsors would be held in the coming weeks.

Witheriff also noted that a GC17 football committee, in alliance with AFL Queensland, had been established to build a football team to compete in a second tier competition in 2009.

The committee comprises former Brisbane Lions president Graeme Downie, Southport Football Club president Alan Mackenzie, AFL Queensland CEO Richard Griffiths and David Matthews, the AFL's general manager of national and international development.

The launch on Wednesday also unveiled GC17 ambassadors: four-time Olympic basketballer Shane Heal and former champion triathlete Loretta Harrop.

The event was also attended by former Brisbane Lions star Shaun Hart.

But Witheriff said it did not indicate that the former player had a foot in the door for the Gold Coast coaching job.

Former Lions captain Michael Voss is still expected to be the favourite for the coaching job.

"This is just the start of our journey to create the most exciting sports club in Australia," Witheriff said.

"We don't have long, but what we have is a strong faith in the Gold Coast community ... I do know we can deliver.

"It's an opportunity we can't pass up."
