HAWTHORN speedster Isaac Smith will travel west with the Hawks this week and will be given until the last minute to prove his fitness for Friday night's qualifying final against West Coast.
Smith is racing to recover from a knee injury sustained in last Saturday’s win over Carlton.
"I’ll definitely be flying over," Smith told Crocmedia on Tuesday evening.
Smith said he still had some hoops to jump through in order to play in the crucial qualifying final.
"I’m not sure how well it’s progressing, we are just going to give it the next couple of days and see how it goes," he said.
"I’m not going to put the team at risk if I can’t perform, and we’ve got some good guys who can play my role if I don’t get up."
Earlier, Smith failed to take part in the Hawks' main training session on Tuesday. He completed some stationary handball drills and walked two laps before heading to the Hawks' medical tent while his teammates trained at Waverley.
Match preview: second qualifying final, Eagles v Hawks
The gun wingman didn't have any strapping on his left knee, which he damaged in a tackle during the third quarter against Carlton on Saturday, but was moving gingerly.
"We're still not much wiser. Really the next couple of days are going to tell the story; if he can get himself moving then he's a chance to play," football manager Chris Fagan told the club's website.
"But we'll probably know more by tomorrow night. At this stage he's a 50-50 chance to play and we'll just see how the week pans out."
Young gun Billy Hartung seems the logical replacement if Smith is ruled out, after the NAB AFL Rising Star nominee collected 30 touches in Box Hill's VFL qualifying final win.
Meanwhile, pacy midfielder Bradley Hill and youngster Daniel Howe left the track early after only taking part in stationary skills drills.
Veteran defender Grant Birchall arrived late on the track and didn't join the main session in the first 20 minutes before training was closed to media, but he completed some straight-line jogging and kicking.
In a good sign, Cyril Rioli looks set to return from a bout of gastro after he took part in the main session.
"He was pretty bouncy on Monday morning and he can't wait to play on the weekend, so he'll be no issue at all," Fagan said.
"It's probably timely that he's had a bit of a break. He's played 20 out of the 22 home and away games, which is the best he's been able to achieve for a while, so I think that will probably help him coming into finals."
Skipper Luke Hodge (suspension) and small forward Luke Breust (rested) also trained with the main squad.
The Hawks have all but put a line through small forward Zac Webster after his spate of hamstring concerns continued when he limped off in the VFL on Saturday.
