St Kilda resists urge to bring in Billy Longer to combat West Coast’s battery of big men
ST KILDA assistant David Teague says the Saints won't be tempted to play an extra big man against West Coast’s tall timber despite flying Billy Longer to Perth as an emergency.
The Saints took 24 players to Perth on Thursday, with off-season recruit Longer and Sam Dunell both travelling as emergencies.
Teague doused any rumours that the Saints would pull a late change ahead of Saturday night's clash with the Eagles at Patersons Stadium.
"We've got a couple of guys that are a little bit sore, but at this stage we're going in as planned," Teague said.
"I think most teams fly one; we've chosen to fly two.
"We're comfortable with our structure, the way we're playing at the moment.
"We're going to back that in. We believe that contested ball is very important.
"It's often won on the ground, so we've got to make sure that we're winning that."
Eagles coach Adam Simpson predicted a scrappy affair on Saturday night where contested ball would be at a premium.
Teague spent three years at West Coast as an assistant coach under John Worsfold before joining Alan Richardson at the Saints this season. While he doesn’t believe he can provide the Saints with any insight into the Eagles' current game plan, Teague feels he has an intimate knowledge of the playing group.
"The game plan has probably changed a little bit, but you know the individuals," Teague said.
"Players have been coming to ask about those players they may play on, so I'm hoping I've been able to given them a little bit of insight and we'll be able to execute tomorrow."
