The Saints' coach has been at the helm for two years after taking over from Ross Lyon at the end of 2011.
St Kilda CEO Michael Nettlefold said while he didn't expect an announcement in the "short term", it was something he expected to be finalised ahead of next season.
"You'd like to think we'd be having those discussions before then," Nettlefold told SEN.
"He'd be keen to get an extension to his contract, we've got a young group coming through and it's something the board will consider in due course.
"There's no issue there.
"It's something that we'll work on over the next couple of months. It really depends on work loads, these things need a fair bit of work."
Nettlefold also said the Saints were on the verge of announcing something regarding their arrangement with New Zealand, which he said had "lots of potential and future".
The Saints played the Sydney Swans in Wellington on Anzac Day this year in the first match for premiership points on foreign soil.
He also said the club was continuing to work on establishing a standalone VFL side that would play out of Moorabbin.
"That's something we're working on with Sandringham at the moment," he said.
"It's so we can get a standalone VFL team so we can fully control that talent pathway. That will also be very good for our members.
"It's still our heartland in many respects, it's still a fundamental part of our history so that's important."
