This weekend: Werribee v Collingwood - Saturday, May 13, 2pm, Eureka Stadium

Dropped forward Mason Cox kicked four goals in Collingwood's 11-point loss to Werribee at Wangaratta on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Tom Langdon emerged unscathed in his first game for more than a year after dealing with knee and ankle issues.

The news wasn't so good for Tim Broomhead, who was concussed in the second quarter, while Jesse White may have hurt his hamstring.

Cox, 26, played three games in the senior team before being demoted.

Callum Brown was influential while Matthew Scharenberg continued to press claims for a berth in the AFL side after another impressive game.

Werribee overcame a 41-point deficit at the first break to win, 17.10 (112) to 15.11 (101).

Darcy and Griffin were also dominant in the air and took 11 marks between them.

Midfielder Tom Sheridan gathered a match-high 34 disposals and six tackles playing on the wing, while fourth-round draftee Luke Ryan rebounded effectively from half-back courtesy of his 24 disposals and 13 marks.

Defender Zac Dawson (13 touches) featured at the opposite end of the ground and his left-foot snap in the second quarter was one of his few highpoints.

State league affiliate: Geelong (VFL)
This weekend: Essendon v Geelong - Saturday, May 13, 12pm, Windy Hill

Tough onballer Scott Selwood played his first game without a minute's restriction since returning from injury and was one of Geelong's best in its 61-point loss to Essendon at Windy Hill on Saturday.

Selwood notched up 21 disposals and 10 tackles as he spent most of his time in the middle and competed hard all day.

The 27-year-old has played three successive matches in the VFL after overcoming a toe injury.

Aaron Black booted two goals and impressed in the first quarter but was quiet for the rest of the game as the supply dried up, while Tom Ruggles' marking was a highlight. Jackson Thurlow had 19 disposals and seven rebound 50s.

After leading at the end of the first quarter, Essendon kicked away to win 17.14 (116) to 8.7 (55).

Despite not being named among the Suns' best players, midfielder Will Brodie and ruckman Daniel Currie (one goal) also showed encouraging signs.

The Suns were without Jack Bowes, Keegan Brooksby, Brayden Fiorini, Matt Shaw and Josh Schoenfeld from last week's NEAFL win over GWS, with these players travelling with the senior squad for the historic clash with Port Adelaide in China.

The 21-year-old made a short-lived return from the same injury that kept him out for the past fortnight, suffering his latest head knock in the opening minutes of the game.

State league affiliate: Sandringham (VFL)
This weekend: Coburg v Sandringham - Sunday, May 14, 2pm, Piranha Park

Luckless midfielder Nathan Freeman came off the ground just before half-time due to concussion and didn't return in the second half of Sandringham's 11-point come-from-behind win.

The yet-to-debut Freeman, whose career has been ravaged by repetitive hamstring injuries, has played at VFL level in the past five weeks after struggling with a hip complaint in recent months.

Sandringham coach Lindsay Gilbee described Freeman's injury concern as "a slight head knock that wasn't going to be risked in the second half".

"He went low on a ball and got caught head-high," Gilbee told AFL.com.au on Sunday.

The Zebras coach added key forward Paddy McCartin "not only banged the door down but kicked off the hinges as well" after his four-goal performance, while Shane Savage had 33 touches and "used the ball well" playing on the wing and across half-back.

First-year midfielder Ed Phillips, the No.56 pick in the 2016 NAB AFL Draft, sustained an apparent lower leg injury and was taken off the ground on a stretcher.

"He seemed to be up and OK in the rooms after the game … so he'll get scanned to see what the extent of that injury is," Gilbee said.

The 26-year-old notched up 10 disposals, 21 hit-outs and a goal.

Mitch Wallis again pressed his case for selection with 29 disposals and six inside 50s.

It was his third straight game in the VFL, after racking up a combined 64 disposals in his previous two matches.

Wallis, 24, suffered a badly broken left leg against St Kilda late last season and missed the club's historic premiership.

Shane Biggs won 27 disposals while Stewart Crameri was quiet with nine. Crameri was in the hands of the trainers after bravely going back with the flight and copping a heavy hit in the last quarter.

Port Melbourne kicked away in the last term after a tight tussle, winning 17.9 (111) to 12.9 (81).
