COLLINGWOOD has moved to lock in midfielder Steele Sidebottom by offering the 25-year-old a five-year deal that would tie him to the Magpies until the end of 2021.

The deal would remove Sidebottom from the free agents list and ensure the talented player spends his peak years with the Magpies.

The midfielder is understood to have attracted interest from other clubs, however he re-affirmed at the club's leadership announcement last week that he intended to commit to Collingwood beyond 2016.

"I'm fairly confident (the contract) will sort itself out in the next couple of weeks and I'll get it out of the way before the season starts and just worry about footy," he told afl.com.au last Thursday.

No deal yet, but Pies close to Buckley signing

Sidebottom has been in the club's leadership group in the past three seasons and is considered crucial to the Magpies’ hopes of rising back up the ladder under Nathan Buckley.

He was selection No.11 at the 2008 NAB AFL Draft and a key player in the Collingwood’s 2010 premiership team.

Sidebottom has now played 143 games for the Magpies and been placed in two of the past three club best and fairests, finishing fifth last season despite missing six games after breaking his thumb in round one.

Collingwood has bolstered its midfield in recent years recruiting youngsters Adam Treloar, James Aish, Levi Greenwood and Taylor Adams, while adding Jordan De Goey through the draft.

The Magpies also locked in skipper Scott Pendlebury until 2020 at the end of last season.
