BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss says talent will play no part in the decision on whether or not to axe troubled forward Brendan Fevola.

The Age reported on Saturday that the Lions had decided to sack the dual Coleman medallist after a meeting with the AFL on Friday, with the decision to be formalised early next week.

Fevola has been undergoing a rehabilitation program in Brisbane to treat depression and alcohol and gambling problems, and hoped to return to the club soon.

He has two years remaining on his contract, reportedly with about $1.5 million due to him.

The Age online reported on Saturday afternoon that, speaking at the Lions' family day in Melbourne, Voss said: ''It's not now about that [talent] any more.

''It's not about whether he works well with (Brisbane captain) Jonathan Brown or whether we've kicked goals or we haven't, it's not about what skill component he brings or his talent he brings.

''We've seen over a point in time that that's been unquestioned about what talent he has, but it's much more complex than that.''

Fevola's management company, Velocity Sports, says it has been kept in the dark over the prospect of any upcoming decision on his future.

''We're anxiously awaiting some form of communication from the club - we've been waiting since Brendan said (last week) he wanted to keep playing,'' a company spokesman said.

The AFL have reportedly told the Lions that if the decision was made to terminate Fevola's contract, his salary would count towards the salary cap but could be spread over two years.

Fevola was traded to the Lions from Carlton after the 2009 season following a string of off-field incidents despite impressive on field achievements for the Blues.
