All the teams for Round 10 in the Smithy’s VFL.
Richmond’s two mid-season draftees will wear the black sash for the first time when Jacob Blight and Campbell Gray line up for the Tigers against Geelong in their AFL curtain raiser at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday.
Blight, a 196cm key defender from Peel Thunder who took 13 marks for the WAFL in a recent State game against the SANFL, was taken at pick No.2 on Wednesday night, with Essendon VFL forward Gray picked up at No.16.
They will bolster both ends of the park for a team that has been punching above its weight given the injury curse hanging over the Swinburne Centre.
Tylar Young became Richmond’s seventh ACL victim of the season last week, while Kaleb Smith will be the 40th AFL Tiger of the year as Steely Green drops back to the VFL.
Geelong has named AFL premiership ruckman Rhys Stanley alongside Jed Bews and Category B rookie Joe Furphy, a 202cm basketball convert who will make his VFL debut.
Two more mid-season draftees will get their first taste of action with his new club as Hawthorn’s new key forward Jasper Scaife makes his debut for Box Hill Hawks against Essendon and Saad El Hawli lines up for the Bombers for the first time.
Scaife, a 197cm key forward from West Perth who has kicked 11 goals in seven WAFL games, will debut alongside top 10 draft pick Nick Watson, who has spent the first part of his AFL career playing for Hawthorn, with El Hawli being joined by Strathmore youngster Ryan Brodie as a first gamer for Essendon.
Will Setterfield also comes in for Essendon, with Jye Menzie named in the AFL team and Nick Bryan and Archie Roberts named AFL emergencies, while Ned Reeves was promoted by Hawthorn and Jai Serong and Clay Tucker are injured, meaning both teams are short on big men.
Gold Coast will be without star ruckman Ned Moyle for the Grand Final rematch against Werribee at People First Stadium on Sunday as the big man gains another well-earned AFL recall alongside Will Graham, but the Suns do regain Mal Rosas from a hamstring injury and omissions Alex Davies and Jake Rogers.
Zai Millane, the Suns Academy member who is the son of Sean and the nephew of late Collingwood great Darren, will make his VFL debut.
The Tigers made just one change, with last week’s late withdrawal Angus Hicks returning for his replacement Matt Keast, who hurt his hamstring late in the second quarter against North Melbourne.
Former St Kilda star Sam Gilbert return to State league football when he attempts to help the Northern Bullants get off the bottom of the Smithy’s VFL ladder in their northern Derby against former alignment partner Carlton at Genis Steel Oval on Sunday.
Gilbert, 37, who played the last of his 208 AFL matches – including three Grand Finals – in the final round of the 2018 season, hasn’t lined up at VFL level since 2019.
He has since played for Bonbeach and Old Haileybury and steps in to provide some much-needed experience and steel to a Bullants team that had its reputation for developing young talent enhanced by Saad El Hawli being recruited by Essendon in the AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft on Wednesday night.
Talented young tall Will Elliott and ruckman Max Johnson are the other key inclusions for the Bullants, while St Bernard’s VAFA player Marcus Holland will make his VFL debut at 24.
The Blues have been bolstered by the return of Thursday night’s AFL substitute Jack Carroll, plus Corey Durdin, Caleb Marchbank and Harry Lemmey as they try to avoid falling to the bottom.
Frankston star recruit George Grey has been ruled out for at least six weeks with facial fractures suffered in an innocuous incident against Southport last week.
Grey played out the game but his face blew up during the week and he was delivered the bad news on Friday morning, robbing the Dolphins of a key piece of Jackson Kornberg’s puzzle that has put them inside the top 10 approaching the halfway point of the season.
Young forward Lachie Sharp will miss two weeks with a neck injury, but Jack Newnes returns after being rested last week and Connor Riley has forced his way back into the team alongside Will Kennedy in his first game of the year and Ryan Jacobs.
Frankston’s task in its 1050th VFL game is a Battle of the Bay against Sandringham in what is the Zebras’ first visit to Kinetic Stadium in a remarkable nine years, and the Zebras have coincidentally made nine changes – eight forced – to the team that beat Casey Demons in a classic last week.
Tim Membrey, Hunter Clark and Dan Butler will play for St Kilda, Zak Jones, Tom Campbell and Ben Paton have gone to Perth as travelling emergencies and Zaine Cordy (knee) and Isaac Keeler are injured.
Cooper Sharman, Hugo Garcia and Ryan Byrnes return for the Zebras down, with mid-season draftee Max Hall and captain Anthony Seaton among the inclusions.
Port Melbourne has lost star defender Dan McKenzie to a calf injury for its 150th birthday celebrations in their Frank Johnson Tribute match against Williamstown for the Johnson-Callahan Cup at ETU Stadium on Sunday.
Luckless midfielder James Cousins has overcome a Round 2 hamstring injury to make his return for the most anticipated home-and-away game of the year, with key defender Finn O’Dwyer and rebounder Ryley Stoddart also back from injury to replace skipper Cam Polson (hamstring), Max Philpot (calf) and Noah Gadsby.
Coburg has two first gamers for its clash with Casey Demons at Piranha Park on Saturday, with South Morang product Davin Cameron and Port Melbourne recruit Josh May brought in for their first games for the Lions as Ryan Sturgess misses with a hamstring injury.
Tom Fullarton has been named for Casey to play his 50th VFL game, with Blake Howes and Ned Moodie also included.
All matches in the 2024 Smithy’s VFL and VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website, AFL Live Official App and VFL App.
Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will broadcast select matches live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7plus nationally. This week’s broadcast game will be Northern Bullants vs Carlton.
