Ruckman Reilly O'Brien responded to his shock omission from the senior side with a dominant outing for the Crows, finishing with 32 hitouts and four clearances.

Mid-season draftee Toby Murray, young brother of Nick, provided solid back-up for O'Brien with nine hitouts and two clearances, while also kicking an equal-team high two goals.

Carlton has coughed up a 40-point second-quarter lead to go down by three points to Essendon on Sunday, with the Bombers slamming home 10 goals to four in the second half to steal the win.

Harry Lemmey fired up forward with two goals, four tackles and three clearances, while Jesse Motlop was equally as influential with two goals of his own to go with four clearances and 16 disposals.

Defenders Lewis Young (seven marks, 18 disposals), Caleb Marchbank (eight marks, 11), and Billy Wilson (21 disposals, three tackles) stood tall in an under-fire defence.

Ruckman Alex Mirkov finished with 25 hitouts and five clearances, Jaxon Binns kicked one goal and had 10 touches, and young forward Ashton Moir had 11 touches and six tackles.

Key defenders Domanic Akuei (12 disposals, four marks) and Sam Durdin (11, six) and tall forward Rob Monahan (four) all did their bit.

Ash Johnson (11 disposals, four clearances) and Jakob Ryan (18 disposals) both kicked one goal apiece, while mid-season draftee Iliro Smit proved his credentials with a game-high 22 hitouts.

After being dropped from the senior side, Category B rookie Wil Parker was strong in an under-fire defence with 18 touches and four marks.

Edward Allan (18 disposals, five tackles, five clearances) and Reef McInnes (16, five, five) were both solid contributors.

Wingard, who has played five VFL games this year, had four disposals and three tackles before reporting soreness and missing the rest of the contest.

Harry Morrison and Jai Serong were prolific.

Morrison gathered 31 disposals and 13 marks, while Serong had 26 and 10 respectively.

Anthony Scott and Oskar Baker put in strong showings in bids to be recalled to the senior side but it wasn't enough as the Dogs fell to their first loss of the VFL season.

Scott, who suffered a concussion in the opening minutes of his first senior game of the year against Sydney in round 12, gathered 29 disposals and kicked a goal while Baker matched those numbers to be among the team's best players.

Jedd Busslinger was busy again with 27 touches and 10 marks, while Caleb Poulter also did some nice things in a 18-disposals, six-mark performance.
