CHRIS Fagan says there's been no dropped heads around Brisbane following the season-ending injury to livewire Charlie Cameron, with the Lions coach taking a glass-half-full approach.
In his first 11 games at the club following an off-season trade from Adelaide, Cameron has lit-up Lions matches, kicking 17 goals and providing a spark of excitement in the forward 50.
But against North Melbourne last Sunday, the 23-year-old suffered a Lisfranc injury and will undergo season-ending surgery next week.
Fagan said despite losing his team's most explosive player, the Lions had quickly moved on.
"Squads win premierships and it's not ideal that Charlie's out, but it gives someone else an opportunity. We need to find out more about our players and what other options we have if he's not there," Fagan said.
"Injuries come along and you need to have that depth.
"Spirits are good and we're very much looking forward to the game (against Essendon) on Sunday."
Allen Christensen (concussion) and Hugh McCluggage (calf) both trained well on Thursday, but will have to pass a final test on Saturday to confirm their inclusions.
After seven weeks in the NEAFL, Sam Mayes has been recalled and will play his 100th game.
Fagan said the versatile 23-year-old had done everything asked of him at the lower level.
"He's still a young man, he's gone through a patch in recent times of not-so-good form, but lately in the NEAFL he's been really good and deserved his opportunity," Fagan said.
"He won plenty of the football, defended well when he needed to, was clean, is running well, fit, all of those things."
Brisbane have lost all 11 of its opening quarters this year, and not surprisingly, Fagan said that had been a focus ahead of playing the Bombers.
He reiterated comments from captain Dayne Zorko earlier in the week, saying the Lions had to show more composure with the ball.
