COLLINGWOOD is set to maintain its tradition of handing No.35 to the first player it lands in this year's NAB AFL Draft, regardless of whether it picks up Josh Daicos as a father-son selection later in the draft.
At the end of 2010, the Magpies decided to honour the legacy of Josh's father, Peter, and dour defender, Simon Prestigiacomo, by having the first player Collingwood picked in each draft wear No.35 in their first season.
Alex Fasolo was the first player to wear No.35 in his initial season, after being pick No.45 in the 2010 draft.
Since then Jamie Elliott, (traded for pick No.25), Brodie Grundy (pick 18), Matthew Scharenberg (pick 6), Jordan De Goey (pick 5) and Brayden Sier (pick 32) have worn No.35 in their first season.
Although the Magpies are considering selecting both Josh Daicos and Callum Brown, (son of former skipper Gavin) as father-son recruits, they will not be tempted to give Josh his dad's number unless he is first Magpie selected.
AFL.com.au understands the prevailing view is that there would be no reason to change this tradition.
The Magpies first pick in the draft is No.28, with a bid for either of the two promising youngsters considered unlikely before that selection.
Collingwood then has picks 44, 51, 62, 65, 83 and 101.
Peter Daicos retired in 1993 having kicked 579 goals in 250 games and becoming an icon of the club, kicking 97 goals in the Magpies’ 1990 premiership year.
Prestigiacomo retired at the end of 2010 after 233 games having selflessly withdrawn himself from the 2010 Grand Final due to injury, after playing 13 games that season.
Current Magpie Darcy Moore wears the No.30 his dad Peter wore with Collingwood between 1974 and 1982.
Cameron Cloke wore his father David's No.33 at the Magpies.
Rhyce Shaw wore his uncle Tony's No.22 during his 94 games at the Magpies before he joined the Sydney Swans.
Other famous father-sons include Carlton's Jack Silvagni, who wears No.2 at the Blues, after his father Stephen and grandfather Sergio made the No.1 guernsey famous, while ex- Geelong champion Gary Ablett jnr wore No.29 at the Cats rather than the No.5 his father wore.
