All the teams for Round 18 in the Smithy’s VFL.

Cricket convert Zak Evans has been rushed straight into the Gold Coast Suns’ team for their must-win QClash against the red-hot Brisbane Lions at People First Stadium on Saturday.

Evans, 24, the former Victorian and Melbourne Renegades BBL fast bowler, signed with the Suns this week and has been given permission to start training and playing VFL immediately to help him become reaccustomed to the game he last played in school.

His debut comes alongside the latest member of the Suns Academy’s Broadbeach footy factory in Fin Gray, while joint Larke medallist and likely top-five draft pick Leo Lombard is now free of representative duties and comes in alongside boom forward Jed Walter, Alex Sexton, Connor Budarick and Jy Farrar.

The Lions, who are chasing a ninth-consecutive win since being thrashed by the Suns in Round 6, have their own Academy debutant in Sherwood 201cm ruck/forward Tom Gillett, while fellow tall prospect Billy Richardson plays his first game of the year.

North Melbourne and Geelong have made 15 changes between them for their vital game at Arden Street Oval on Saturday, with the Kangaroos needing to win to keep their season alive and the Cats aiming to stay in the top four.

Toby Pink comes in for the Kangaroos alongside VFL stars Sam Lowson and Ben Davis and a club debutant in one-game Giant Nick Newton. Zane Duursma, Will Phillips, Jaidyn Stephenson and Charlie Lazzaro have been promoted and Curtis Taylor and Tyler Sellers are injured.

The Cats, meanwhile, regain Brandan Parfitt, Mitch Knevitt and Phoenix Foster and have named two debutants in South Barwon’s Ethan Borys and Bell Park’s Jack Sarcevic, but have lost Tanner Bruhn, Rhys Stanley and Jed Bews to the AFL, with Connor O’Sullivan being rested.

The big names are everywhere for Collingwood and Richmond as they prepare to lock horns on Sunday in a game relocated to the Tigers’ home ground at the Swinburne Centre.

The Magpies have recalled Lachie Sullivan, Joe Richards and Reef McInnes from AFL duties, plus Ash Johnson, Charlie Dean, Jakob Ryan and Ed Allan from illness and injury as they aim to break a 12-match losing streak, although Mason Cox, Jack Bytel and Wil Parker move up into the AFL team.

Remarkably, Richmond hasn’t tasted victory over Collingwood on its home deck in 130 years at this level, but will start favourites to break that drought with Marlion Pickett, Maurice Rioli, Noah Cumberland, Tyler Sonsie and Kane McAuliffe all being selected and the concussed Oliver Hayes-Brown the only listed player to drop out.

Sydney’s injury issues at the top level will leave it behind the eight-ball as it attempts to keep its season alive in a must-win clash with Southport at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday.

The Swans have lost premiership hero Sam Reid to retirement after another hamstring injury last week, while Aaron Francis and Sam Wicks have been named in the extended AFL squad.

However, Tom Hanily does return from his ankle injury and two debutants will get their chance – Allies representative Joe Harrison from Warner’s Bay and UTS’s Hugo Birks, a former Sandringham Dragon.

The Sharks, who will celebrate 100 club games for dual premiership and dual best and fairest winner Mike Manteit, have no room to move in their top-four chase after giving up a big lead against Sandringham last week, with Suns Academy key position graduate Taine Dawson to wear the black and white for the first time.

But Jacob Townsend’s comeback lasted less than half a game, with his concussion a fortnight ago ruling him out for the rest of the season.

Box Hill Hawks are set to have the luxury of playing gun young midfielder Cam Mackenzie after he was named in their team to meet Williamstown in the battle for a top six spot at Box Hill City Oval on Sunday.

The sixth-placed Hawks will drop into the Wildcard positions if they lose to the seventh-ranked Seagulls and Mackenzie is likely to be joined in the team by mid-season draftee Jasper Scaife, but ruckman Ned Reeves, wingman Ed Phillips and forward Josh Bennetts will miss.

Williamstown received better news, with Mitch Cox and Harry Minton-Connell back from injury, although young tall Heath Ollington has hurt his foot.

Melbourne premiership player Tom Sparrow has been named to play his first Smithy’s VFL game in three years for Casey Demons against the GWS Giants at Casey Fields on Saturday morning.

Sparrow has missed just three AFL games since the Demons’ 2021 flag but is an emergency to take on the Giants later in the day.

Casey has made six changes to the team that lost to Frankston last week, with Lachie Hunter (calf) returning from injury, while Tom Fullarton and Adam Tomlinson were travelling emergencies last week. Jed Adams (lung) and Ben Brown (knee), whose last-minute failed fitness test left the Demons a man down last week, are out.

The Giants made a solitary Academy swap as they shoot to stay in the finals race, with South-West Sydney Blues youngster Coby Hilton to debut.

Essendon and Sandringham each have a debutant for their clash at Windy Hill on Sunday, the Bombers naming Leitchville-Gunbower bottom-ager James Barrat and the Zebras picking St Bedes-Mentone product Adrian Cole.

Former Saint and Zebra Jack Peris returns from a month out with a foot injury for the Bombers and Nick Hind has lost his spot in the AFL team to play his 50th VFL game, while Arie Schoenmaker and Logan Young come in for the Zebras with Will Vesely in concussion protocols.

Port Melbourne could be without Josh Green for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury, while Mitch Moschetti has a minor foot problem as they drop out of the Borough team to take on an unchanged Werribee, with Kyle Borg forcing his way in for his first game of the season alongside Angus Curry and Baker Smith.

Coburg and Frankston have named unchanged teams for their clash at Piranha Park on Sunday, the first time this season both combatants in the same game have done that.

All matches in the 2024 Smithy’s VFL and VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website, AFL Live Official App and VFL App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will broadcast select matches live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7plus nationally. This week’s broadcast match will be Box Hill Hawks vs Williamstown.
