North Melbourne is a club with a rich and colourful history. It’s players, past and present, are among the league’s most highly respected and it’s list of legends is as long as any in the competition.

However there is much about the club, which began in 1869, that remains a mystery.

The club’s records are constantly being researched and updated with new documents discovered every week in the most unlikely of places.

Delving deep into the record books is something club archivist Barb Cullen enjoys most but one particular task, issued to her by North CEO Eugene Arocca has stumped her completely.

“It’s been something that has eaten away at me since I came to Arden Street,” Arocca explained to kangaroos.com.au.

“It’s the missing link in many respects - who won the North Melbourne best and fairest awards between the seasons of 1925 and 1934?”

Originally the club only had records indicating the winners of the Syd Barker Medal from 1937 onwards, but Arocca, Cullen and some loyal supporters did some heavy lifting and uncovered the winners of the 1935 and 1936 medal in Wally Carter and Charles Skinner.

“I received an email from a football lover about 1935 and 1936 and decided to investigate further. The Argus on-line confirmed the email however, there was nothing to report any previous winners or if any were actually awarded,” Arocca added.

Further ‘digging’ yielded even more promising results.

Cullen discovered a copy of the club’s 1929 Annual Report which names the winner of that year’s best and fairest, Charlie Cameron. The report reads “Mr. C. Cameron was awarded the Cup donated by Mr. Ward for the best and fairest player for the season”.

With 1929 covered, nine years still remain without best and fairest winners and Arocca is determined to rectify the issue.

“We are appealing for information which will help us put names to the seasons of 1925 to 1928 and 1930 to 1934. If anyone has a copy of an Annual Report from any of these years, they would be doing the club a great service by allowing us to look at it and check the information”.

“I am very hopeful that by the time we install new honour boards in our new facility, we will have filled in the gaps for those missing years”.
