SHE’S BECOME a cult hero at Adelaide because of her bright pink helmet, but Heather Anderson almost didn’t make it to the NAB AFL Women’s competition.
Six months before the season began, Anderson, 22, was told she should give up the sport because if she reinjured her shoulder it could be the end of her career as a medic in the Australian Defence Force.
However, Anderson was determined to achieve her goal and was eventually selected with the Crows’ second pick in the NAB AFL Women’s draft.

The defender has become known for her distinctive helmet, which she wears so her mother can watch her playing.
Anderson said her mum, who is vision-impaired, had trouble watching her play as a junior and suggested Anderson spray-paint her helmet pink so she would stand out more.
She initially refused but eventually bought one and has worn it ever since.
Anderson, originally from Canberra but now living in Darwin, has become an important part of the undefeated Adelaide team, averaging 7.3 disposals and one tackle per game in defence.
