COLLINGWOOD is confident young midfielder Tim Broomhead has escaped serious damage to his shoulder, although he is in doubt for the Magpies' next assignment against West Coast in round 16.

Broomhead was substituted out of Thursday night's clash with Port Adelaide in the third quarter with the injury and was spotted on the interchange bench with an ice pack strapped to his shoulder.

The Magpies' medical staff have decided against sending him for scans, with the club allowing the South Australian to stay an extra day or two in Adelaide to visit family and friends over the weekend.

"He's a bit sore in the shoulder but we're not that concerned that it's a long-term injury," Magpies football manager Neil Balme told AFL.com.au.

"There's some chance he won't play next week but we're pretty confident he'll be OK."

Balme said there was still a chance the club would have Broomhead's shoulder scanned if he reported discomfort over the weekend.

"He'll be back tomorrow or Sunday, so if he's still sore we'll see if there's more they have to do with him but they're (medical staff) pretty confident they won't need to," he said.

Broomhead, who was the round 11 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee, has averaged 15 disposals from his 10 games in 2015.

Highly regarded for his clean hands in traffic and strong goal sense, Broomhead was selected by Collingwood with pick No.20 in the 2012 draft.

He extended his contract with Collingwood until the end of the 2016 season last September.
