Hawthorn has secured promising defender Kyle Cheney from Melbourne in the Club’s second deal during trade week.

The Hawks receive Cheney and selection No.66 in exchange for pick 52 in the 2010 National Draft.

The 21 year old was drafted to the Demons at selection No.53 in the 2007 AFL Draft and made his debut in the opening round of 2009.

Hawthorn’s General Manager Player Personnel and Strategy Chris Pelchen said the tenacious youngster is a great addition to the Hawthorn list.

“Kyle has showed some promise in his two years at Melbourne and we’re confident he’ll develop into a valuable player at the Hawks,” Pelchen said.

“He is a quality young man with a bright future ahead of him and we feel he will complement our backline, especially in light of Campbell Brown’s recent departure.”

“Kyle is a genuine country boy - tough, hard and uncompromising and we’re sure with his attitude and endeavour, he will fit in perfectly at Waverley Park.”

A compact 184cm and 87kg, Cheney was recruited from Warracknabeal and North Ballarat under 18s and has played a total of 14 AFL games.
