THE ATMOSPHERE outside the MCG on Grand Final day is set to change dramatically, with car parking "highly likely" to be banned in Yarra Park.
It comes as the MCG, police and security agencies prepare to ramp up security for the AFL's biggest day, amid overseas terror attacks on sports and entertainment venues.
Parking is already limited around the 'G on Grand Final day because of corporate marquees and the free fan festival which has increased in scale over recent years.
It is expected fans with disabilities and emergency vehicles would still be able park in a designated zone.
However it would likely mean the end of fans holding pre-game barbeques from the back of their cars in Yarra Park.
The MCC confirmed a final decision would likely be made within a fortnight.
"It’s not a done deal but it's highly likely," MCC venue and event services manager Gerard Griffin told 3AW.
"It’s a combination of security, safety and logistics.
"It’s becoming a very challenging park to juggle."
