Sophie Delezio
Five-year-old Sophie Delezio is again being asked to fight for her life after she was hit by a car on a pedestrian crossing while riding in her stroller on Frenchs Forest Road in Seaforth (Sydney's north) at approximately 4pm on Friday afternoon.
Assistant director of clinical operations at the Sydney Childrens Hospital in Randwick, Jonny Taitz, said despite being very serious, Sophie's injuries were not as bad as they originally feared.
Sophie suffered a broken jaw and shoulder bone, numerous rib fractures and bleeding around her left lung as a result of the accident, along with skull bruising - though thankfully no serious head injuries.
Dr Taitz said the main concern was the damage to the lung as "there is a lot of blood in that lung".
Sophie remains in a critical but stable condition in intensive care where she is expected to remain on a ventilator for at least three weeks.
Australia's heart went out to the little Swans fan on December 15, 2003 when Sophie suffered horrific injuries as a result of a vehicle ploughing into her day-care centre at Fairlight and being trapped under the car.
She lost both feet and some fingers along with third-degree burns to 85 per cent of her body but fought bravely despite enduring many, many operations and painful rehabilitation.
At the end of last year Sophie - joined by her brother Mitchell and parents Ron and Carolyn - watched the Swans train at the SCG and met a few of her heroes including Barry Hall and Michael O'Loughlin, while she also attended a couple games.
Earlier this year Sophie started school at Balgowlah Heights Public School. Her godfather Mark Tonelli said at the time "She's just such a little champion; it's unbelievable; she seems to be going really, going from strength to strength."
A 80-year-old Frenchs Forest man is due to appear at Manly Local Court to face charges - dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm and failing to give way at a pedestrian crossing - on June 15.
Our thoughts and well wishes are with Sophie and her family at this time.
