DELISTED St Kilda midfielder Farren Ray hopes the cut in interchange rotations will give him a chance to continue his career at a third club.
Ray, 29, was delisted on Friday, with the Saints happy to re-draft him as a rookie.
But he told News Corp he would prefer to join another club as a delisted free agent, keeping him on a senior list.
"Rotations next year go from 120 to 90 and running has always been a strength of mine," Ray said.
"Guys are going to have to be out there for longer and that’s my go.
"My main trait really is I’m a selfless role player, so I feel like I’ve still got plenty to give and I can develop young guys really well."
Ray has played 12 seasons – seven with the Saints and five previously with the Western Bulldogs – for a total of 205 games.
He is not bitter and says he understands St Kilda's direction, but after averaging more than 17 disposals last season and 21 in 2014, believes he has plenty to offer.
Ray said he hoped to emulate the role of former Bulldogs teammate Daniel Cross, who joined Melbourne for his final two AFL seasons and helped set standards there, finishing top-six in both best and fairest counts.
"I’m 29 — not 32 — and you still need experienced leaders," Ray said.
"Even if it’s a role of nurturing boys at VFL level and I’ll play games whenever they want to use me.
"I’ve been through a lot in my career so I can relate to a lot of players.
"I’m definitely not ready to give it up.
"If no one else is interested I’ll go on with other parts of my life, but you’re a long time retired."
If no club picks up Ray, he will discuss the rookie option with Saints coach Alan Richardson.
Delisted free agency runs until November 9.
