THE CAREER of banged-up big man Shane Mumford looks to be finished, with Greater Western Sydney preparing for Rory Lobb to lead the ruck next season.
Mumford has been considering his future after seeking medical advice on his injured foot and degenerative knee since the season ended.
The intimidating big man is contracted for 2018 but is seemingly negotiating terms to hang up the boots.
"We're working towards a resolution," Giants list manager Craig Cameron told NAB AFL Trade Radio.
"There's just a few things that need to get sorted out, but I think in the next couple of days that will get finalised."
Mumford has played 172 games after starting with Geelong, before moving to Sydney and being part of the 2012 premiership side.
The 31-year-old finished equal eighth in GWS' club championship but his form dropped-off at the end of the season amid struggles with his body.
Lobb stepped into the breach when Mumford missed the Giants' semi and preliminary finals, and is set to shoulder the responsibility in 2018.
"We're going to give Rory a chance at No.1 ruck. He's 205cm, he's an outstanding athlete, so we think he can do all that stuff around the ground," Cameron said.
"I think the opportunity to have a more flexible forward line, maybe rucking Jonny Patton here and there will also be looked at.
"We've also got young fella Matthew Flynn in the NEAFL who has had two really good years of grounding.
"We're really keen to give him a run at it at NEAFL level, and Dawson Simpson backed up pretty well for us this year when he came in.
"We won't be bringing anyone (another ruck) in through trade, but it doesn't mean we won't draft a ruckman though, or even look for one as a delisted free agent."
