WHEN David Hale left North Melbourne for Hawthorn after last season, he was hoping to get more of a run in the ruck.

And that's just what he got in the Hawks' 45-point win over Melbourne at the MCG yesterday.

Brent Renouf was subbed off with concussion early in the third quarter. Hale moved from attack into the ruck, sharing the load with Jarryd Roughead, and he relished it.

He moved around the ground and was involved in several attacking sorties. He ended up with six kicks, 13 handballs and a respectable eight marks.

"When the game opens up, you get a bit of space in the middle," he said. "A link-up ruckman is pretty important these days."

Hale said he's been enjoying working with Hawthorn ruck coach Damian Monkhorst. He's also enjoyed the change of scenery.

"A fresh start, that's what I needed," he said. "And to play in the ruck, to get around the ground, has been enjoyable."

Arguably the biggest change since moving from Arden Street, Hale notes, has been the manner of victory, at least on Sunday's performance.

The Hawks trailed by 19 points at half-time before rattling on 8.11 in the third quarter to go into the final break with a 33-point lead. There were moments of pure silk in that quarter, as the Hawks' undoubted talent received a full airing.

Hale admitted with a laugh that such mastery was rarely achieved with the Roos.

"At North, I don't think we ever won that convincingly," he said. "It was always tooth and nail, fight to the end."
