CTV > A tribute to the 1958 premiership team

The 1958 premiership team came together on Monday night to reminisce and celebrate their flag glory 50 years ago.

Over 200 people gathered in the Olympic Room at the MCG 50 years after the Magpies’ famous 13th premiership, a miraculous 18-point victory over the seemingly invincible Melbourne.

In what added to an already magnificent occasion, it was announced that the nine members of the 1958 team not already Life Members of the club would have the honour bestowed upon them at the Annual General Meeting later in the year, making all 1958 premiership heroes Collingwood Life Members.

A day earlier, the team as presented to the crowd on the Telstra Dome turf prior to the Magpies’ round 13 clash with the Bulldogs.

The players set to receive Life Membership are:

  • Harry Sullivan
  • Brian Beers
  • Ken Bennett
  • Ian Brewer
  • Mike Delanty
  • Bob Greve
  • Barry Harrison
  • Bill Serong
  • Ken Smale

All players were in attendance on Monday night except for Errol Hutchison and Brian Beers, who were unfortunately away, while Ray Gabelich and Barry Harrison, both deceased, were represented by their respective wives Gwen and Serena.

For the record, the Magpies beat the Demons 12.10 (82) to 9.10 (64), denying Melbourne its fourth straight flag and protecting Collingwood’s record four consecutive premierships from 1927-30, a record that still stands today.
