The moment: Lindsay Thomas sent Carlton supporters home feeling blue on Friday night. With the Blues mounting a challenge in the last quarter, a ruck contest deep in the Roos' forward line bounced off bodies and somehow found Thomas, who again had given his opponent Aaron Joseph the slip. He snapped home his sixth goal with his celebration telling the story.

2. Hawthorn 19.10 (124) d Adelaide Crows 11.11 (77) at Aurora Stadium

The moment: The Crows came up empty handed from their trip to Tassie, soundly beaten by 47-points by a Hawks side returning to form. Cyril Rioli's effort in spinning and sliding past three hopeful tacklers before hitting a leading Lance Franklin who in turn set up a simple goal to Brent Guerra was the perfect example of Adelaide grabbing at thin air.

3. Geelong 23.16 (154) d Essendon 12.11 (83) at Etihad Stadium

The moment: Travis Varcoe had a blinder for the Cats kicking five goals, perhaps best displayed with his final goal in the last quarter where Steve Johnson bombed from outside 50 and Varcoe snatched it out of the air on the run and put it on his boot in the blink of an eye.

4. Sydney Swans 14.9 (93) d Port Adelaide 8.7 (55) at AAMI Stadium

The moment: Daniel Motlop is a player of two extremes. He can be extremely good and extremely bad. On Saturday night, it was the latter. Motlop crunched Lewis Roberts-Thompson in a marking contest. While arguing with the umpire he gave away consecutive fifty-metre penalties which provided the Swans with a scoring opportunity. He was benched immediately.

5. Richmond 19.12 (126) d West Coast Eagles 11.11 (77) at the MCG

The moment: Jack Riewoldt was taking sensational grabs one minute and kicking goals the next. With three minutes left, he had nine goals to his name, everyone took a collective breath as he marked on a tight angle 25m out. As cool as you like, Riewoldt slotted home his 10th major sparking wild scenes for players and supporters alike.

6. Western Bulldogs 17.19 (121) d Brisbane Lions 8.8 (56) at Etihad Stadium

The moment: Western Bulldogs' ruckman Will Minson has been under the pump this season but got off to the right start with two first-term goals. When Minson marked late in the quarter and slotted a huge 50m left-foot major, it set the scene for the Dogs - and for Minson in his 100th game - to recapture some form.

7. St Kilda 12.13 (85) d Fremantle 10.7 (67) at Subiaco Oval

The moment: Stephen Milne was never going to celebrate his 200th without some highlights the best of which was when he proved too elusive for Dockers’ defender Chris Tarrant, got away from him, had three bounces and ran in for his third goal of the game and the Saints went on to give him the perfect milestone win.

8. Collingwood 9.22 (76) drew Melbourne 11.10 (76) at the MCG

The moment: After the Pies got out of the blocks quickly, the Demons slowly worked their way back into the contest. When Mark Jamar marked on the Dees’ attacking 50, his eyes darted as he looked for an option. Cruising past was Colin Garland, who received the handball and from a long way out kicked truly to give the Demons belief.
