CHARLIE Cameron has spent his first day at the Brisbane Lions' Gabba headquarters, saying it was family that lured him back to Queensland.

Cameron was a member of Adelaide's losing Grand Final team last month, but after four years with the Crows, requested a move back to his home state. 

It was facilitated in the dying minutes of last week's NAB AFL Trade Period, with the Lions giving pick 12 to Adelaide in exchange for the speedster's services. 

The 23-year-old grew up on Mornington Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria, before spending five years boarding at Brisbane's Marist College Ashgrove.

After meeting some of his new teammates on Thursday morning, including skipper Dayne Beams, Cameron told the club's website he was excited to be back in Brisbane. 

"Just being close to family," Cameron said when asked why he requested the trade.

"I've got a small community up there, so to try and be a role model for them, try and inspire them. 

"I'm looking forward to doing that."

Cameron first played Australian Rules at his rugby-dominated Brisbane school, but admitted he was "bored" with the sport before taking it up again when he moved to Western Australian to work in the mines. 

Cameron said he would work with indigenous players in the Lions' Academy.
