Recently retired Lions triple premiership player and former Club Champion Nigel Lappin is among a shortlist of nominees for the AFLPA’s Madden Medal.

The AFLPA Madden Medal Awards will be held in Melbourne on Friday 5 December to celebrate the contributions of all retired players across a number of categories.

The awards culminate in the presentation of the 2008 Madden Medal to the player who has best demonstrated on-field excellence, off-field football achievements, personal growth, and community spirit.

The award is named in honour of former AFLPA Presidents and champion Essendon and Carlton players Simon and Justin Madden.

Lappin is one of seven high-profile retirees to be nominated for the honour along with Robert Harvey (St Kilda), Shane Crawford (Hawthorn), Peter Bell (Fremantle), David Neitz (Melbourne), Scott West (Western Bulldogs) and former team-mate Mal Michael (Essendon).

Lappin’s impressive playing credentials include 279 senior games, a Club Champion award, three premierships, four-time All-Australian selection and Club captaincy to name a few.

The inaugural 2007 Madden Medal was taken out by North Melbourne star Glenn Archer.

Lappin has also been nominated for the GNC Live Well Football Achievement Award which is based on playing achievements and legacy to the game.
