The Eagles will face Fremantle at Subiaco Oval on March 7 as part of the NAB Challenge series with all funds raised from the match to assist those affected by the Victorian bushfires.
The Eagles also play Adelaide in Alice Springs this Saturday and Selwood said the match would be used to give West Coast’s best line-up a run before next month’s round one clash with the Brisbane Lions.
"The guys are motivated now. We want to put our strongest side on the park and we want to start getting the game plan implemented as well as we can," Selwood said on Monday.
"Now's the time where we're really taking steps forward. If we can get a couple of wins in the next few games in the pre-season it just gives us that confidence going into Brisbane that we are able to win games.
"With the team on the paddock I think we shape up pretty well."
Selwood said the entire squad would be keen to resume its rivalry with Fremantle, adding that he did not expect the charity aspect of the match to take away from its competitiveness.
Nevertheless, the Victorian said the devastating impetus for the match would remain paramount.
"It's touched me pretty deeply, being from Bendigo. Seventy houses went down there," he said.
"I know a few people in the area, fortunately people whose houses haven't been burned. But they're sitting right in the heart of it and it's going to take a while for the region to pick itself up.
"But it's a great for myself to know that we're able to do something over the other side of Australia."
Fremantle defender Luke McPharlin said the charity match was a terrific initiative and something the WA football community should get behind.
McPharlin said a number of senior Fremantle players would be putting their hands up to play, but the club's focus would remain firmly fixed on their round one clash with the Western Bulldogs.
"We have to appreciate that it is still pre-season and our focus is absolutely round one," he said.
"I think it's about the day, it's about the initiative, it's about the fundraiser and it's certainly not round one. So all of those factors will be considered.
"We certainly hope to be competitive on the day, but we have the bigger picture in mind."
