HAWTHORN is mourning the loss of former president Phil Ryan who has passed away at the age of 98.
 
Ryan served in the position for 11 years between 1968-1979, adding to his 52 games as a player between 1941-1947.
 
The Hawks won three premierships (1971, 1976 and 1978) during his reign as president.
 
Hawks chief executive Stuart Fox extended his deepest sympathies to Ryan's family, friends and former teammates.
 
"The board of directors, management, staff and players of Hawthorn Football Club wish to extend their sincerest condolences to Mavis and the Ryan family at this sad time," Fox said.
 
"Phil epitomised the spirit of Hawthorn and is an icon of our club.
 
"As a past player, past president, life member, supporter and devotee of the club, Phil will be remembered as a gentleman of high personal ethics and for his dedication to all things brown and gold."
