SYDNEY superstar Lance Franklin is yet to begin contact work as he recovers from shoulder surgery.

Franklin, who turns 30 at the end of this month, tore his anterior labrum at training last year with a few weeks left in the home and away season but did not miss any games.

The three-time Coleman medallist told sydneyswans.com.au he expected to start skills work in the next fortnight.

"It's usually three months' (recovery) and I think it's just about three months now, so I'm nearly back to full contact, which is really good, just as games start," Franklin said.

"This next period for me is really important, this next two weeks. I'll hopefully be back into skills.

"This next four weeks will be a really big month for me, just to get myself right."

Shoulder injuries have plagued the goalkicker throughout his career but Franklin has played at least 20 matches in a season eight times in his 12-year career.

While his preparation has been restricted, Franklin has been able to hit the track.

"In round 18, I hurt it in training when I went to tackle 'Laids' (Jeremy Laidler). I hurt the back of the labrum, so I had surgery on that straight after the Grand Final," he said.

"Everything's gone well from there. I've come back. Although I can't do any contact, I've been able to run."

Franklin tipped the club's first selection in last year's NAB AFL Draft as one to watch.

"It's always nice to get out there amongst the fellas and train, especially with having a lot of new young kids come in there, so it's nice to actually get out there and train with them and see what those boys have got," he said.

"I think Oli Florent's really showing some glimpses of his talent so I'm looking forward to him hopefully playing some seniors this year."
