The Brisbane Lions will approach the 2012 season with some significant milestones on the horizon.

Simon Black - the Lions’ most decorated player - is set to become just the fourth player in our Club’s combined history to reach 300 games - joining rare company in Kevin Murray (333 games), Marcus Ashcroft (318 games) and Alastair Lynch (306 games).

Black currently has 296 senior matches next to his name and should, barring injury, notch up the triple-ton in Round 4 against the Gold Coast SUNS in QClash 3 at the Gabba.

With plenty of good football still left in him, he could realistically play on in 2013 in challenge Murray's long-standing record of 333 games.

The three-time Club Champion is now also the fifth oldest player to have ever represented the Brisbane Lions. But Black, who was 32 years and 153 days old during the team’s final match of the 2011 season, should elevate himself into third position by the end of 2012 by moving ahead of former team-mates Martin Pike and Shaun Hart.

Alastair Lynch, who currently holds the ‘honour’ of being the oldest player to have represented the Lions, played his last game aged 36 years and 98 days.

Fellow Lions superstar Jonathan Brown is set to reach his own milestone early in 2012 considering he is just two goals shy of bringing up 500 AFL goals.

Brown, who overtook Bradshaw last season to sit fourth in the Club’s all-time goal-kicking list, was left stranded on 498 goals last season when a second facial injury against Geelong prematurely ended his campaign.

No doubt Lions fans will be hoping that the skipper will become just the 49th player in VFL/AFL history to reach 500 goals against Melbourne in Round 1 at the MCG.

But Brown is still 135 goals behind Lynch’s Club record of 633 career goals.

Given Brown has averaged 2.37 goals per game throughout his career, statistically he would need to play approximately 57 more matches - or the better part of three uninterrupted seasons - to etch his name at the top of the Club’s record books.

Meanwhile, young gun Jack Redden looks set for a big future after playing 54 straight matches since making his senior debut in Round 15 of 2009 - giving him the longest current streak of consecutive matches at the Club.

His team-mate Daniel Rich, enjoyed a similar run of consecutive matches before a stress reaction in his foot cut his tally short at 59 games in Round 14 last season.

Redden would need to play more than five uninterrupted seasons before challenging Marcus Ashcroft’s Club record 170 consecutive matches from 1992 - 2000.

Speaking of milestones, local Queensland utility Cheynee Stiller should become the next Lions player to reach 100 senior games after finishing the 2011 season on 97 matches.
