LEON Cameron is planning for a premiership with Greater Western Sydney after signing a two-year contract extension that will keep him in at the club until at least the end of 2018.
The Giants announced Cameron's re-signing on Thursday at Spotless Stadium, along with a new co-major sponsor in Toyo Tyres, just weeks before the season proper kicks off.
The Giants tasted victory just six times under Cameron in his first season as senior coach, but made significant improvements in 2015 to just miss out on a maiden finals berth with 11 wins.
Unsigned Giant in no hurry
As well as the on-field success, Cameron has played a major role in the club's ability to re-negotiate new contracts with almost a dozen of the Giant's best young players.
Chief executive David Matthews made no secret of his delight in retaining the club's second coach.
"Leon Cameron has done a fantastic job leading our young team in his first two seasons and we’re very confident he’s the right person to continue taking this group forward," Matthews said.
"He’s had a significant impact on this club in a relatively short space of time.
"Our win-loss record has improved dramatically and he’s been pivotal in seeing our young stars, including Jeremy Cameron, Dylan Shiel, Devon Smith, Stephen Coniglio and Phil Davis, re-commit to the club."
An assistant coach for over a decade under the likes of Rodney Eade (Western Bulldogs), Alastair Clarkson (Hawthorn) and Kevin Sheedy (GWS), Cameron's ability to build strong relationships with his players is seen as one of his greatest strengths.
The newly signed coach said he had jumped at the chance to commit his future to the fledgling team and had never contemplated looking elsewhere.
"It was a really easy decision to re-sign. It gives myself, our coaching staff and the playing group a great opportunity to keep progressing and hopefully reach the ultimate goal of a premiership,” said Cameron.
"We know that it's a hard, ruthless business but to have stability in the footy club and having the coach and club commit is really, really good.
"I love coaching these young players. We feel as though we're on the right track and we're progressing in the right direction, but you can't take anything for granted.
"Just because we won 11 games last year doesn't mean we're going to win 12 this year."
